Building serverless applications with infrastructure as code (IaC)

Building serverless applications with infrastructure as code

In this session, learn how to move from the console to the AWS SAM framework. See how to construct a serverless application using reusable templates designed specifically for serverless. Also, develop, debug, and deploy your serverless applications to multiple environments with a simple command line. By the end of this session, understand how to start with a serverless application on your laptop and take it to production without leaving your favorite IDE.

Installing AWS SAM

AWS SAM installation instructions

AWS SAM provides you with a command line tool, the AWS SAM CLI, that makes it easy for you to create and manage serverless applications. You need to install and configure a few things in order to use the AWS SAM CLI. Read full instructions here.

Mastering AWS SAM

AWS Online Tech Talks

The AWS Serverless Application Model (AWS SAM) is an open-source framework for building serverless applications, and in this tech talk you’ll learn how to use SAM templates to manage serverless infrastructure as code. From serverless specific resources to pseudo parameters, you’ll learn how to construct highly flexible and re-usable SAM templates to manage your serverless application. You’ll also learn best practices for using the AWS SAM CLI in conjunction with SAM templates to develop and debug serverless applications on your local machine.

Using AWS AppConfig with AWS Lambda Extensions

AWS code example

This is an example of how AWS AppConfig can be used with AWS Lambda and Lambda Extensions. Using AppConfig to separate your application configuration from your application code is good practice. By using that, you are able to deploy configuration changes independently from your code. AWS AppConfig helps us achieve that.

SAM AWS init

Learning AWS SAM series

In this video I do an in depth view of the AWS SAM CLI command, sam init. The `sam init` command Initializes a serverless application with an AWS SAM template. The template can be one of the AWS managed templates or a custom template maintained by you. The AWS managed templates provide a folder structure for your Lambda functions, and configures the Lambda functions with an event source such as an Amazon API Gateway, an Amazon S3 bucket, Amazon DynamoDB table, or any number of other event sources available in SAM. This project includes everything you need to get started and to eventually extend it into a production-scale application.

AWS SSM Parameter Store and AWS SecretsManager in AWS SAM templates

Sessions With SAM

In this session we cover using AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store and the AWS SecretsManager within AWS SAM templates. Using these services helps developers store account specific secrets that are easily utilized by SAM on application creation and updates.

SAM AWS build

AWS documentation

The sam build command processes your AWS SAM template file, application code, and any applicable language-specific files and dependencies, and copies build artifacts in the format and location expected by subsequent steps in your workflow. You specify dependencies in a manifest file that you include in your application, such as requirements.txt for Python functions, or package.json for Node.js functions.
