Fullstack web apps on AWS without a PhD in cloud

Resources for Fullstack web apps on AWS without a PhD in cloud

In this talk, Julian Wood takes an ordinary React and Express app from localhost to AWS one step at a time. The audience votes with emojis on their phones, and the votes float up the big screen. The same Express server runs on AWS Lambda unchanged, using the Lambda Web Adapter. Amazon DynamoDB then gives every execution environment one shared copy of the votes, and Amazon Bedrock reads out the result, streamed to the screen. An AI agent in Kiro builds the database and AI steps from a set of project rules and a prompt.

The demo app

Live emoji voting, in four steps

Each step is a complete, runnable copy of the app. 1. Local: React and Vite frontend, Express server, votes in memory. 2. Cloud: the same server on Lambda behind Amazon API Gateway. 3. Database: votes in one DynamoDB table shared by every execution environment. 4. AI: Amazon Bedrock reads each result in one of four personas. You need Node.js 24 and, from step 2, an AWS account with a CDK bootstrapped Region.

AWS Lambda Web Adapter

Run web apps on Lambda unchanged

The adapter starts your web server inside the Lambda function and passes it each request. Express, Next.js, Flask, Spring Boot and other frameworks run with no Lambda handler code.
