Building an API platform on AWSMonetize2 min

There are a few ways to implement monetization of the API Gateway:

  • leverage API keys and usage plans, bill per usage plan
  • segment APIs, bill per product access (different products/SKUs would include different APIs)
  • bill per consumption (requests made)
  • sell access to your APIs on AWS Data Exchange

API keys/usage plans

You issue API consumers API keys and they pay for a usage plan that meets their consumption level needs. As the API Gateway enforces usage plans, there is no additional tooling necessary. You may consider additional visualization of usage plan utilization, see sidebar for a link to an example implementation.

Note: You can sell your usage plans through AWS Marketplace, see documentation for details.

API segmentation

This approach is based on API access control and does not require additional modifications to the logging or reporting. Consumers pay for a product they chose based on their API needs, and API allows or denies access to the product based on the client credentials. See Security lesson for more details on access control. For example, professional version users would have access to a subset of APIs that enterprise version users have.

Bill per consumption

Here, you would need to implement reporting, which allows you to see consumption breakdown per client. You can use API Gateway access logs to track requests and process them with Amazon Athena or Amazon Glue. Also, some of the partner solutions (e.g. Moesif) provide this type of reporting "out of the box".

Sell on AWS Data Exchange

You can sell access to your data via APIs on AWS Data Exchange. See product page for more details.
